A nice winter’s day for our Mixed Fours Championships – perhaps a pity that only 7 teams had entered but this did not stop a day of good competition from all the bowlers involved.
The early morning sun made it difficult to see where one needed to send their bowl – a handy excuse if things didn’t go well, but we all had the same problem to overcome so it was an even playing field.
A 9.00am start, three games of 12 ends underway with Ken Hayward’s team with the first bye.
My first game was against Margaret Griffin’s four and it was a close game throughout. The 10th end saw Margaret leading 12 -10 but we got a 4 on the next end and finished with another point to win 15-12. Fred Adam’s four had a sound first game against Hazel Rose winning 14-4. The other first round game was also a tight game – Paul Skilton’s team in the lead on the 10th end leading 11-9 but Brian Thompson’s team came to light with a 3 and a 2 to win the match, 14-11.
The 2nd round gave Paul Skilton’s team the bye . Ken Hayward had a big win against Margaret Griffin 15-6, my team won over Hazel Rose 15-7 but Fred and Brian had a really tight match and the 12th end saw the final score 10 all. An extra end was played and Brian’s four came out on top with three points.
The final round of the day saw Fred needing another win to qualify but Margaret Griffin put paid to that idea with a win 20-8. Paul Skilton won his game against Hazel 15- 10 and Ken won his match against Brian Thompson 11-6, so Sunday morning will mean Paul Skilton will have to beat Ken Hayward to qualify.
So as it stands at the moment, Brian Thomson, Ken Hayward and my team have qualified with Paul Skilton still with a chance if he wins in the morning.
Let’s hope we have another fine day.

A sunny day with the Tararua Mountains in the background.
