It was something new for us all who played in todays Pairs Gala – 2 bowls-2 ends games and all teams that had entered, having to play each other once during the day.
Players gather and hear the rules from Neville.
Play gets started
With only two ends, result were fairly quick, either a win, loss or a draw and these were recorded throughout the day to find the outright winner from the number of wins, then draws and If needed, ends won
As this was our first time running such an event, it wasn’t sure how long the Gala would last and it became obvious at lunch time that things would finish relatively early. It was put to all participants that a Sudden Death Singles tournament follow – again 2 bowls and 2 ends but if there was a draw, an extra end would be played.
All agreed to take part and five rounds followed to reach a winner.
The weather contributed to it being a very interesting day and quite a challenge. It was also great meeting up with players from other areas, some who had been members of our club.
It has been suggested that the next time we try the event, the number of ends be increased to four. This I feel would be a good idea.
At the end of play, President Ken Hayward thanked all Club members who had helped make the day such a success and the players who had come from clubs -Waikanae Beach, Waikanae, Otaki Railway, Central Levin, Takaro, the Heretaunga club in Hastings and from our Levin Club. (Hope I haven’t missed any out.)
So what of the day:
Lots of sun, some great skill in the art of draw bowls shown, friendly atmosphere throughout the day between bowlers, A green that performed very well, a very good attendance of interested spectators, lunch and afternoon tea prepared by the club members and available, and above all, an enjoyable and challenging day of bowls.
Special thanks to Neville Turnbull who came up with the idea of running the event.
