Triples Championships

Two days have been played in this season’s Triples, Saturday to find the qualifiers and today for post-section play to find the winner. There was quite a change for our players this year with play being two bowls each as done in the Centre event but only 16 ends per game were played, whereas the Centre use 18. It will be interesting to see what will be used next year after I heard quite a bit of discussion from our players.
Men and Women each had eight teams entered and after Saturday’s play, four teams in each had qualified,
So to the results, firstly from our Women today..
Hazel Rose(s), Lodzia Wnek and Grace Virtue were drawn to play Dianne Short(s), Christine Gardner and Marie Anstis and the latter got away with a good start 6-0, but from then on, Hazel’s team scored, often with threes, to reach the end 20-12.
The second post-section game was played between Alice Spicer(s), Liz Galloway and Diana McGill and Audrey Sciascia(s) Hildi Ewart and Lana Mahupuku.  After the first seven ends, Audrey’s team had won only two ends and were trailing behind Alice’s players, 2-13. Audrey’s team then went on, scoring on six more of the remaining ends while their opponents managed only1single and a final 2. Still this was enough for Alice’s team with their total reaching 16 points to their opponents 8.  This meant that Audrey’s team had won more ends, but still lost the game. Alice’s players, when they scored, generally gained points on an end, larger than a single.
The final between Alice Spicer and Hazel Rose saw the two teams scores after ten ends at 8-7 but from then on, Alice’s team went on, missing out on only one more end, to reach the final score of 17-9.
All players who took part in the competition did well and the winning team will play in the Champion of Champion Triples event  on 20-21 April 2013.

Four Men’s teams also qualified for Post-section play and on Sunday morning, Neville Turnbull (s), Keith Galloway and Keith West  played Rob Cotter (s), Barnaby Hamid and Jim Bagnall while at the same time, Shoota Ballinger(s), John Adams and Brian Coe played Joe Wnek(s), Martin Howse and Roy Dickson.
Joe’s team started with a four but their opponents played well and won the game 25-11 putting Shoota’s team into the final.
The other opening game had Rob’s team starting with a three but Neville’s trio reached the tenth end by scoring 2 threes and 2 singles. During the same period, Rob’s players managed 5 singles so by the tenth end, teams were level at 8 all.  From then on, Rob scored on all the remaining ends to take the match  16-8.
The final got Rob just in front on the sixth end with the score then at 7-6 but the next two ends made a dramatic change with his teams scorning a 6 and then a 4 ….  and the board then read 17-6. From then on both teams scored some points but the game ended with Rob taking out the win 24-11. Rob’s team will join our Women’s team to play in the Champion of Champions event in April.
Congratulation Rob, Barnaby and Jim.
