It’s been a real challenge weekend, bowlers playing singles and the weather doing all it could to make it a very challenging time. Note, the sex of the players was not a challenge, it was just the individual bowlers, male and female, challenged in so many ways.
Saturday had the light rain off and on and for the bowlers, the challenge of winning two games to qualify for Sunday’s post section.
I arrived soon after lunch today to see how things were going and heard that Joe Wnek had gone down to Joan Hayward by one point. Must have been a real challenge between the two players. That put Joan into the final but she had to sit around and was waiting for the winner of the game being played between Ken Hayward and Shoota Ballinger to be found when I arrived..
Only a few ends had been played when I saw them and what a game it proved to be. It was on the Dales green (water still on the astro) and the two players were really challenging each other. Ken seemed to be favouring short ends, Shoota long, but each were playing their bowls close to the Jack. There was not a great wind blowing but it seemed to make playing to the west, more difficult to get bowls really close to the Jack wheras to the east, tight heads were more often seen.
As the game progressed, Ken slowly moved up the board to be holding just a few more points than his opponent.
Shoota drew or then needed a drive, seemed to get up closer on the board but in the end, Ken moved on and won the game.
Some really great shots were played by both bowlers, draws, runs drives, all challenging for them and entertaining for us.
And so to the final, but I had to go away and missed the game between the two Haywards (not related), Ken and Joan. Can congratulate Ken who won the game 21-8 and also congratulate Joan for reaching and playing in the final. Top stuff.
