Wednesday morning started off with a light frost and early mist over the town but it didn’t take long to work out that we would be having a good 3 Games Gala at the club. Equally it didn’t take too long to make a quick change of outer clothing because the jersey I planned to wear would have been far too hot to wear.
The next difference for this gala for me was that the usual team I played in wouldn’t be in action; two players were otherwise engaged and two others were soon into action with me.
The sun was out at 11.00am, the draw had been made for 7 rinks to be used and all teams quickly got under way.
Rob enjoying the sunshine and the close bowls.
It was obvious halfway through the first game that many players were finding it too hot and off came jackets/jerseys, but during the rest of the day’s play, the off and on of clothing was a result of the sky – either clearing or clouding up.
So to play, and at the end of the three games the results were as follows:
1st Ken Hayward, Ian Wenham, Hildi Ewart
3 wins, 18 ends and 40 points.
2nd Dianne and Gordon Short and Hazel Rose
3 wins, 17 ends and 33 points.
3rd Murray Griffin, Martin Howse, Michael Norris
2 wins, 16 ends, 32 points.
For me, a special event has been the playing for the second day with Hildi. Yesterday she played Two for me in the afternoon draw and as it happened, lead in our Gala team today. It has been an interesting feature of her play, comparing with others, how much green she takes with her bowls; usually on the back-hand. They are size 2 and I presume, quite old. It really is fascinating to see her bowls go so wide and then seem to turn at right angles, ending up close to the jack. This has not been an accident, as she was doing it all afternoon yesterday and again today. This had set up so many of our heads, just lovely to see and enjoy. Maybe it is easy to use the modern bowls which take far less green, but from a viewers point of view, I think it is just great to see her bowls on their course, finally ending so often by the target. A pleasure to watch.
