2 Bowls-2 End Pairs & Singles Tournament.

DSC03644A 10.00am start for the fifteen pairs teams got the day’s play started on the Dales Green. Earlier there had been a couple of short but heavy showers but that didn’t prevent us getting the days’s play started. What did let us know about was that we would have to contend with was the very strong gusting westerly wind.
We made sure we were well wrapped up for the conditions and then got the games started.

One had little time to judge the line and weight bowls needed because after playing up and back, the game was ended and a start was then made on game 2….and so on. All teams had a personal card on which was listed the team member’s names and the information which told the players on which rink they were to play and the result (W/L/D).By the end of all rounds, the signed cards were handed in so that the overall winning Teams could be announced. A break for lunch midday was taken and the Pairs games ended around 2.00am.

The best performance came from Fred Adams and Peter Gardner who had 12 wins, 3 losses and no draws.

The sudden death Singles then took place; again, just two ends and you were either still in or on your way back to watch further games. (If a draw occurred, an extra end was played.)
The same system of play was used, only two ends being played, and it was interesting watching the play. No little time for quick recovery, you could be out in no time at all. Bella, a junior player showed that all you needed to do was get your bowl(s) closer to the jack than your opponent. Shoota found this out in his ‘game’ against Bella when he quickly left the green.

Shoota says farewell to Bella

As well as the teams faced on the green, was the wind that faced us all. For me it was a struggle playing into the westerly. Try as I did, the wind seemed to beat me most of time, my bowls ending up short. Not quite as bad, playing with the wind. Luckily for me, my partner Ken, drew consistently well and though we didn’t join the winning group, we did reasonably well.

It was an interesting experience playing in the the two events during the day and showed that skill was still necessary in the game of bowls no matter who or what faced you and accepting the challenge was always what one had to do.

Thanks go to all who in one way or another who helped the club make the day so successful.
