Women’s Singles – Day 1

Eight rinks on the cotula green plus another on the artificial green got play in the Women’s Singles started this morning. A gray and windy morning with most players well wrapped up. Men did the marking of all the games and the aim for players was to win at least two out of three games.
Four players won their first two matches and those still with a chance of winning a further game so that they could qualify got started early in the afternoon.
The weather decided that they would have to complete this round, hopefully, tomorrow because rain set in and any further play was called off.
It was and interesting day viewing how players managed their bowls with the strong gusting wind present.

lodzia

Lodzia, well dressed for the conditions, has sent her bowl on its way.

The first game I marked was between Mary Judd, a new member to our club from Taihape and Alice Spicer. Both showed real quality under the conditions and throughout their game, there was little between them. After 10 ends there was only one point between them (Mary 8 and Alice 7), the 17 end had Alice ahead by 1 point – 14-13 and the crucial end came with the scoreboard at 19 all.
The final end arrived with both players getting close to the Jack but for Alice, two of hers took the end and the win was hers. This had been a very good game to mark, watching the players in action.

I wasn’t able to see the game between Margaret Griffin and Jan Dawson but their card shows that they had an interesting battle between them. The score read 9 all on the tenth end and by the 17th end Margaret had extended her score to 17 points. jan then got moving,  a 2,2,3,1 and was just n the lead 18-17. Then it was 19 all and with a further point Jan was in front, 20-19. So close, but experience showed for Margaret and a further two points gave her the lead and the win.

The afternoon also showed, for a time, the keenness of some of our males to have a roll-up. They had spent a short time checking out what had happened during the morning and then took their bowls on to the Dales green for some play. It didn’t take long for them to get moving as rain soon arrived and before the  first end got underway, they picked up their bowls and came back inside. A wise decision.

Edna and Francis had been watching play, but rain soon got them on their way home.

The Dales green soon after water was on the surface.
Looks quite patterned.
