Tonight was the first night for the Grant’s Corner-to-Corner competition for club members. Sixteen keen members were there ready to go at 5 pm. Alice arrived very soon after and Shoota (of course) and Debbie hurried in. Well, not too late. The big race at Addington was temporarily forgotten. Terror to Love would have to take his chances without our support. Arnold Taiaroa got to bowl first downwind and at the end of the first end of two bowls each it was Debbie who held pole position, though Keith and Bill both had two bowls in the twelve. There were a number of very short bowls – Neville and John not excepted – and a few overcooked ones pulled out of the ditch.
The second end saw the field reduced to six with Paul, Jim, Roy, Keith, Debbie and Jimmy all having one live bowl each. The other three ladies – Alice, Lana and Ralda failed to make the cut. Really the final end was a bit of an anticlimax. None of the six really nailed it and it was Jimmy Adams, a good five metres from the corner who came out the winner.
Jimmy happily received his gift of the sponsor’s product which means that his little still won’t need to work so hard for a while. Well done Jimmy. Oh, and No 13 won at Addington. Fine, except that the spectators left in the clubhouse had no idea what the horse’s name was.
