Waitangi Day at the Club

Waitangi Day brought an afternoon of fun bowls and an evening of socializing, a nice meal and a cheery quiz show.

The Shanghai Singles tournament in the afternoon drew 18 enthusiastic players who seemed to enjoy a type of competition which is probably unique to our club. After the first round of play the six section winners and the next three highest points scorers went into the Main Draw and other nine into the Plate section. Then after the second round of play the semi-finalists were found and these games produced the three finalists in each section.

In the Plate section Liz Galloway and Jim Bagnall were the semi final winners with Margaret Griffin qualifying with the next highest points. In the final Jim came out on top to take the winners prize. In the Main Draw the semi final winners were Hazel Rose and Omeka Feaunati with Ken Hayward making it through to the final with the next highest points. Ken and Hazel had already played each other twice during the competition with Hazel winning both times, but in the final Ken turned the tables on Hazel to come out a clear winner and take the top prize with Omeka finishing in third place.

A big thanks to Neville, Bill, Barbara, Martin, Greg and Ian who gave up their afternoon to mark the games and to jimmy and Les who marked the finals.

Following the Shanghai tournament Jimmy and Ralda put on a great meal which was really appreciated by all those who came along and stayed on for the Quiz evening. Jimmy, Rob and Peter then did a great job as the Quizmasters and it was good to see four lady visitors  from the Levin Golf Club, playing under the banner Grey Matter take out first prize, with the Educators and the Local Fillies tying for second. It is noted that the teams masquerading as the Brain of Britain A and B teams hardly fired a shot. Jimmy is promising another quiz night on the first Friday of March. It would be great to see even more than the 11 teams which took part this time.
