Our summer closing and Presentation Day was held on Saturday 9 May. Opening proceedings Club President Trevor Turnbull welcomed life members, guests, visitors and players and outlined some of the club’s successes over the season. Horowhenua District Mayoress Sheryl Duffy was the guest speaker. She spoke in her capacity as Chairperson of the Horowhenua Sports Turf Trust, which is responsible for administering five community sports using the Halliwell Turf, and was on hand to present the trophies.
A major achievement this season was the winning of the Kapiti Coast women’s Super 7’s competition for the first time for many years earning the right to represent the Centre in the regional playoffs. Other club achievements included the men’s Division II team winning their Pennants competition; the establishment of a new coaching programme under new club member Kerry Geertson who has coached at the national level; the continuing success of the club’s Work Mates Business House Bowls (now in its 23rd year) and the continued recruitment of new players to the club. Over the past two years over 40 new members have joined the club increasing the playing membership from 90 to 108 in that time – much against the national trend of falling membership.
The afternoon had begun with a well attended roll up on the Dales carpet green and concluded with a sumptuous afternoon tea and cheery social hour.
The club’s winter programme kicks off this week with the usual roll ups on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons afternoons with the disc draw being done at 1.15 pm. The first of the winter galas follows on Sunday 17 May with a 2x4x2 Pairs event beginning at 10 am.
