Interclub-Another Round Played

Another round of Interclub was played yesterday, the men’s Super 7’s playing at Raumati South, the men’s Reserve 7’s at Paraparaumu Beach and the Women’s Reserve 7’s at Central Levin.

The women played Raumati South in the morning games with Dianne Short winning her Singles match 25-22, the Pairs combination, Margaret MacKay and Anne Rolston having a big win 38-13, and the Fours Hazel Rose, Alice Spicer, Marion Ball and Eileen Thorn going down 7-22.

In the afternoon games against Kapiti, Dianne maintained her good form, having another win 25-8. The pairs had a close game but went down 22-26 but the Fours scored very will to win their game 26-6. Overall, a very good return from their efforts.

The Men’s Super 7’s team was up against a strong team from the Paraparaumu Beach Club. Shoota Ballinger had a very good game against Ray Boffa and led for much of the game but finally went down, 20-25. Ken Hayward skipped the pairs with Grant Pratt. For some time they were trailing but fought back, ending their game in a draw, 16 all.

We were holding our own in the fours in the early stages with Neville Turnbull saving us with some accurate drives, but when we scored, we were only picking up one shot at a time. Dropping fours on three occasions let our opponents get away from us and we finally went down, 9-23.

The afternoon round was against Waikanae Beach; we hoped to do well in this round but our only win was from Grant and Ken who won their pairs game 34-7. Shoota went down 14-25 and we ended our fours at 16-16. In this game, things looked good for us when we were leading 10 nil but our opponents came back and we finally ended up with a draw.

We now have dropped to 5th place after being First equal after the first round. We have plenty of hard work ahead to improve our position.

Our Reserve 7’s team didn’t have a very successful day, coming out with only two wins which has moved them from 3rd = to 7th position in their section.

The morning games were against Waikanae and Brian Paquin, playing the singles, won his game 25 – 18 and then lost his afternoon match against Paraparaumu Gold 19-25

Our Pairs combination was different this in this round, Jack Willis (s) and Selwyn Riwaka, and they lost both their games, 10-22 against Waikanae and 13-21 against Paraparaumu Gold.

Brian Cooper (s), Paul Gardner, Brian Thompson and Barnaby Hamid were came close to a win but went down in the morning game 14-18 so did manage a bonus point, and continued in the afternoon with a win 17-14.

A busy day for all players and it was good to have some sunshine for a change. Perhaps summer has come!
