The Weekend

A variety of bowling activities took place for our members this weekend, some at our own club and others, at other clubs to play in Centre events .

Our cotula green was set aside for a Women’s Section playing in the Centre Pairs and I believe the green was prepared by Neville Winiata, cutting and rolling it in the absence of Tony, and making sure that all was well for the day’s play.

In the afternoon, some of our members had a roll-up and as well, we had a group from Crightons Building Centre, use the club for their end-of-year activity. I wasn’t there to see them in action but as some of their staff had played in our Business House Bowls earlier in the year, they no doubt showed some of the skills they had picked up then. This was a good opportunity to show people what we have available and what good fun and a challenge bowls can be.

For our six pairs teams which had entered the KCBC Men’s Open Pairs, they also had the challenge of winning two out of three games to qualify for post section play. I haven’t participated for some time in Centre events and though Brian Paquin and I failed to qualify, we had three good games; two of the teams we played went on, one reaching the last eight and the other, still in the last four. The latter team really impressed us in our last game, with the skip R Muollo playing exceptional bowls.

Murray Griffin and Bill Kamo, also playing at Raumati South Club, had a tight second game, only losing the game on the last end by one point.

Two of our teams did qualify and I see on the Centre’s Internet page that Neville Turnbull and Steve Felgitscher won their first game 28-11 but lost their next against Ray Boffa, by one point. ( Ray and his partner have now reached the last four,)

Jim Bentley, (back from his stay in Australia) and Noel McCutcheon, also qualified and had a good first round win, 23-9, but went down in the next round, 9-22.

Coming up this Wednesday is a round in the Rotary competition, using one of the spare days set aside for previous rounds missed out because of rain. The forecast at the moment doesn’t look too promising for mid week. It will be interesting to see if we will get the round played.
