Bowls NZ Nationals will be starting in the Wellington area on Monday 28 Dec with Day 1 of the Men’s Pairs and Singles for Women, and continues through to January 9, 2010.

The following information is from Wednesday 23 December Chronicle where Ken Hayward reported on our club’s activities. It also included details of the above event:

‘a number of our men from our club are taking part in the national open championships. It is such a big event, with more than 1200 men and women taking part, that they can now be hosted only by the largest centres.

This is the first time since 2006 that the championships have been held in the Wellington area with events being staged at 26 clubs as far north as Plimmerton.

The Hutt Bowling club has the honour of being the headquarters’ club and hosting the singles and pairs finals on January 4 and the fours finals on January 9.

The championships are often criticised as being a huge unwieldy event but they are unique in that entry is completely open so that the average club player from Levin could well be drawn to play a member of the national team and gain a lot from that experience.

Players from the Levin club taking part are Rob Cotter, Steve Felgitscher, Ken Hayward, Brian Paquin and Neville Turnbull who are among the 392 entires in the men’s singles, while three combinations from the club – Neville Turnbull and Brian Paquin, Jim Bentley and Noel McCutcheon and Ken Hayward and Fred Adams are some of the 294 combinations taking part in the men’s open pairs.

A number of players from the Central club are also entered but it is disappointing that with the event being held so close to home, there is only one woman from the Levin area taking part- Dene Norton from Central, who is playing in the fours with three Otaki players.’

We wish all our players good games with lots of skill – and a bit of luck always helps.

Today was the chance for a pre christmas roll-up in the sun. I’m sure it felt more like the Havelock North weather that Stafford is used to. he was enjoying his game when I dropped in to see how things were going.
