We all met at the club ready for today’s Mini gala but realised that the chances were slim for it to get underway.
The forecast was for clearing weather, the rain radar showed no signs of rain, the barometer was going up, so the Match Committee decided mid-morning not to cancel early. Around 11.00am the sun broke through but in no time at all, it gave up and the rain came back.
All who had entered turned up, but the showers continued to come on and off and puddles began to form on the green.
Start time arrived, Graeme and Rex went out onto the green, looked west to the coast, noted the rain clouds were there (no sign of Moutere hill), and came to the decision to cancel the gala.
Most I believe were happy with today’s call. Players must realise that decisions are not always easy to make but after studying the pros and cons, one has to be made. Sometimes it will turn out not to be the correct one, but the important thing is that one is made and should be accepted.
I know that I was happy to get home and was able to view on TV the highlights of last night’s tennis at Wimbledon. Some great play but what impressed me most was the way losers of matches congratulated their opponent who had won the game. True sportsmanship.
