I watched the play this morning and also in the early afternoon but was unable to watch the final of this years Mixed Pairs Championship. I wish I had been able. It must have been a great game. This morning’s games were a problem for all of us who were watching- which one to watch as each of the four was so challenging.
Dianne Short and Omeka were playing Bill Clelland and Joan Hayward. One end to go and the score was 11 all. A challenge and in the end four shots went Joan and Bill.
Another game, this one between Ken Hayward and Hildi Ewart v’s Hazel Rose and Vern Murphy.Final end played and the score…15 all. (Hazel had got 1 point to get the tie) The extra end was played and two points were scored by Ken and Hildi to take the win.
Another game on another rink, this one between the Wneks, Joe and Lodzia, and Margaret MacKay and Ian Upston. This was a game that showed you never know how things will turn out. When I arrived, Margaret and Ian were leading 16 – 4 but then things began to change. A 4, then a 5, two ends later a 3 and then a 1, and it was 17 all on the 17th end. A further 1 shot on the last end and the Wnek’s had won. Who would have thought this was going to happen.
Dave Scrivener and May KauKau played Martin Howse and Gwen McLauchlan and Dave was leading 12 – 11 on the fifteenth end. Another close match. The next two ends saw Martin and Gwen pick up six. Dave and May tried hard on the last end but only managed to get one further point, not enough to take out the game.
Now it was semi-final time. Bill and Joan played Ken and Hildi and this game saw one pair doing most of the scoring – the win went to Ken and Hildi, 21-8.
The other game proved to be another cliff hanger with the score after the last end at 10 all. Interesting to note that each of these teams in this game, only scored a 2 on one end, all the rest of their points being singles. Shows how tight it was. So another extra end, and the winning point went to Martin and Gwen.
Now it was the final, and really a pity that I had to miss it. But certainly credit goes to both teams for reaching this point.
The game was played, and I have been informed of the winner – Martin Howse and Gwen McLauchlan the score 22-15.
An extra note, nothing really about the game, but changing from being right to left handed to play bowls is possible. Martin has proved it.
Martin Howse and Gwen McLauchlan. Mixed Pairs Champions.
