Today we had a special T.J. Gala, an annual event in recent years, sponsored by our GreenKeeper, Tony Jones.
Our No 2 green (cotula), as a result of all the planning, preparation and work done by all involved for some time, was in great condition and was a pleasure to play on. Mind you, the weather wasn’t the greatest, often very light rain at times and no sun of note, but little to deter the players on the green.
Tony also invited all players to have lunch which he provided, prepared and presented by Glenda and Joan, in the clubrooms. At the end of the day’s play, he also put on a light evening meal with the help of Brian Cooper. Much appreciated Tony.
Seven rinks were needed for the Gala and four games of 10 ends were played, results as follows:
1st – Bryan Furness (s), Rex and Alice Spicer. 4 wins, 27 ends, 60 points.
2nd – Susan Boxall (s), Ian Upston, Ian Wenham – 3½ wins, 25 ends, 44 points
3rd – Dianne Short (s) Hazel Rose, Gordon Short – 3 wins, 24 ends, 46 points.
Bryan, after receiving the winner’s trophy, thanked Tony and his wife, for giving us such an enjoyable day of bowls.
Last Wednesday, both our greens were used for the playing of the annual Seddon Shield.
Thanks Ken for the following report on the event:
The annual Seddon Shield event for teams of mixed fours was played at Levin Bowls on Wednesday 9 April. A total of 22 teams representing 11 clubs from the Centre played 10-end games on greens in very good condition. At the end of the day only two teams had managed four wins. The overall winners were the team of Neville Turnbull (s), Dianne Short, Hazel Rose and Ken Hayward from the host club with 4 wins and a + 31 differential. Runners up were a team from Waitarere Beach with 4 wins and + 19 differential.
