An early phone call was received that today’s gala would still be on in spite of the over-night rain but was going to be played on the artificial green instead of the cotula. Aren’t we luck to have both surfaces.
Two games in the morning, the first a win but the second a loss, mainly due to Margaret MacKay’s saving bowl on the last end. We had managed to be only one behind entering that end and things were looking good when we were holding four shots. Then cooly and calmly, Margaret drew her bowl into the head to take the shot and the win. A beauty.
After the lunch break, we started the third game but after, in our case, five ends, the threatening rain arrived and we were brought in and the games were called completed at that point. Luckily we were in front so enjoyed our early afternoon tea while we watched the rain stop and the green dry out.
Back out again to finish the day with another win, against Joe and his team. Eileen did her best to upset the head on the last end when we were holding shots , but missed. Came the change over and Joe continued with the assault, two close misses and then he hit the jack, sending it towards the ditch and the awaiting bowls that Eileen had earlier sent down. From five up we went to four down. A big grin from Eileen, but we were able to smile back as we still had the win.
It had been a day of a bit of this and a bit of that, but overall, we had enjoyed our games.
It was nice to welcome Jack Willis back on our green after his break in Australia. He seemed to enjoy the challenge of the green and the conditions, quite different to what he has been used to recently.
