A Great Start

The first round of Interclub got underway this morning with our Super 7’s men’s team playing at Waitarere Beach Club.

Rain overnight and the threat of more during the day didn’t stop us from getting started at 9.00 am and the two trial ends proved what we had already guessed, the green was heavy.

With the three rinks used being next-door to each other, we were able to not only concentrate on our game but at the same time, keep an eye on our other two games, singles and pairs, and watch their progress.

Ken and Rob got a good start in their 21 end game but after an early lead, there was little difference between the two team’s scores, our pair finally winning with the score at 18-16.

Next to us, Shoota played Bill Moran and here again, it was a close game right through until our player reached the 25 point target, to win by 3 points.

In our Fours game we gained an early lead, thanks to good bowls from the front. A drive from Neville which hit the target, not only gave us a good score on that end but also loosened him up so that his draw shots reached the head from then on (Hope you smile when you read this, Neville). We made good progress and were able to end the game on the 18th end with an 11 points lead which gave us the bonus point.

Back at our club our women’s Reserve 7’s team played Central Levin on the cotula green. Lodzia lost her game against Lesley Bocock who previously was a member of our club, the score , 8 – 25.

Our Pairs looked all set for a win until the jack was moved on the last end and they went down by just one point, 18-19. Alice and Margaret had done well and could have so easily won the game, but ……

Dianne Short skipped the Four’s team to a good win 18 – 15, our only success on the day.

Also playing at our club was our Men’s Reserve 7’s Team with their opponents coming from the Otaki Club.. Brian Paquin won his Singles game 25-16, our Pairs went down 16 – 27 and our Fours had a good win 23-14.

Overall, the club did well on this first day of Interclub with the Men’s Super 7 in equal first place with Paraparaumu Beach Club with 28 points, The Men’s Reserve are 3rd equal with 18 points. Our women’s team have left themselves spaces so that we can watch how they improve as the competition proceeds.
