A busy day at the club today with men’s and women’s fours continuing and in the afternoon, members of the public visiting as part of our ‘Have A Go Day’.
The women continued with their round robin play in their championship fours and at the end of play, two teams had the same number of wins. Two big wins to Susan Boxall’s team and a big loss to Margaret Griffin’s team in today’s play left both teams with the same number of wins over-all so the title was decided on differential.
Winner: Susan Boxall (s), Margaret MacKay, Ann Rolston, Alice Spicer.
Runner’s Up: Margaret Griffin (s), Lodzia Wnek, Margaret Lowndes, Gwen McLauchlan
Also playing in the morning were Neville Turnbull’s and Ken Hayward’s teams, both needing a win to get into post section .
Neville had a big win against Fred Adams but Ken’s team missed out after playing Brian Cooper’s team which produced some high quality play.
Next Saturday the Men’s Fours will continue with Neville Turnbull playing Joe Wnek in the semi final and the winner will play the final against Ian Wenham’s team.
Bowls for all ages.
The other big event today was ‘Have A Go’, an idea from Bowls NZ to give people the chance to see what our club has to offer, what options we have for people to play bowls and what other activities take place.
Brian Paquin agreed to organize the day on behalf of the club and together with some club helpers, got a variety of activities ready so that visitors were well looked after.
He would have been pleased to see friends, family members and individuals who had seen the flyier, read the article in the Chronicle or just heard about the activity and had been interested in seeing what was on.
It was great seeing how people obviously enjoyed the afternoon and some have even indicated their wish to return and try out the game again. A contact list was collected by May KauKau so that a follow-up can be made.
Time will tell what the end result of the day will be, but it appeared to be a very good way to inform people on what goes on at the club, once you get passed the gate.
Thanks to all who helped with the day.
