This event was reintroduced for the current season (and hopefully, for the future) and is for men and women who have been playing bowls for ten years or less.
Over the weekend of 9th and 10th January, two Levin ladies teams played at Levin Womens for the Carrell Knight Trophy and three Levin mens teams played at Central Levin for the Bill Gibbsons Trophy. There were 16 teams in total at each green.
After the first day of section play of 4 games of 10 ends each, the two womens teams from Levin Bowls had reached the semi final playoffs and two of the mens teams from Levin had also made the semi finals.
Unfortunately, the two ladies Levin teams were drawn to play each other in the semi finals and Diana McGill’s team with Pam Bagnall as lead and Glenda Rowsell as second defeated Bronwyn Mc Mahon’s team of Bella Law as lead and Julie Stichbury as second and reached the final
Over at Central, the Levin mens teams avoided being drawn against each other, but the team of Robert Falconer as skip, Peter Brown as second and Stacey Thomas as lead were defeated by the Raumati South team they had decisively beaten in section play the day before. In the other semi final, the team of Jim Bagnall as skip, Grahame Law as second and Bill Clelland as lead defeated the team from Kapiti to reach the final.
Both the finals were decided by the final bowl and of each Levin team with one team losing and one team winning because of the way the final bowl fell!
At Central, the mens team had fought back from being seven nil down after four ends to be leading 14-12 with only one end to go. Raumati were holding three shots before Jim Bagnall played his final bowl. When it came to rest, it fell out and instead of possibly being only one down and winning or, at worst, being two down requiring a further end to be played if it had fallen in, Raumati had two shots with a measure for third, which went there way after an umpire’s measure and they won by one shot.
At Levin Womens, Diana Mcgill was leading by one shot playing the last end, but was two down on the head. Her bowl came to rest and fell in. The opposing skip played her final bowl, which did not affect the head and so it came down to a measure which went Dianna’s way and her team were the winners. Well done to her and her team!!
It is extremely encouraging from the club’s perspective that we now have such high quality juniors in the club and long may it continue.
