Another round of Rotary was played yesterday with two of our teams playing at the RSA and the other two at Foxton Beach.
I had a team at the latter green and when we arrived, we were met by a strong wind and a gray sky, not very inviting.
Our first game against a Waitarere team was a real hit and miss affair, they were doing some of the hits and we were certainly providing the misses. After a few ends, my lead told me that when we got the jack, he would fix things and when the time arrived, he tossed it to a full end. What he had forgotten was that it was hard enough to get a bowl up the green on a short end, and he proved it by hardly getting passed half way!! At the end of the 9th end, I decided that as we had no chance of catching up , a cup of coffee would be the best thing. That was when the highlight of the day occurred when my lead took his first sip of his coffee; there was a loud roar after he found that he had used salt instead of sugar! He got up that time, even though it was only up from his chair.
The real highlight of the day was provided by Joe Johnson, skip of our other team. We saw then playing their last end. The board showed that Joe’s team had only scored twice, a 6 and a 4, and this made them equal with their opposition. Joe had one bowl to play and was down on the head. He changed his hand to the very wide side and off went his bowl. It took a large curve and then moved in to the head and took the shot for the win. Great stuff Joe.
