Cobb & Co. Invitation Classic Triples Report

With very cold and wet conditions prevailing on Saturday the fourth Cobb & Co Invitation Classic Triples scheduled starting time was put back an hour and the three  section games were reduced to two sets of five ends each. This enabled the first post section game to go ahead as the fourth game of the day playing two sets of seven ends each.

The principal idea of the two bowl triples tournament is to give sixteen newer Levin Bowls players the opportunity of playing with some of the sports most experienced and best-performed bowlers. Section play was divided into four sections of four teams with the first and second in each section qualifying for the Classic and third and fourth qualifying for the Plate, both groups will be played in two sections of four teams each for post section. The winners of each of these sections will play off in their respective finals.

Playing in sets means that players know that a loss in the first set doesn’t mean a lost game. They are given a second chance to win the second set and have a chance of winning the one end tie-break. This was certainly the case in the final of the Classic when Neil Bovey (skip) Gary Wylie and Donna Gripp won the first set ten points to one against Noel McCutcheon (skip) Kerry Geertson and Grahame Law, the second set was a complete reversal with McCutcheon winning nine points to one. So a tiebreaker was needed to find the winner of the 2016 tournament, Law played two very good lead bowls for McCutcheon only for Wylie with his second bowl getting the shot with an outstanding draw bowl, the skips couldn’t do better with their turn so the Bovey team won the game and the great $600.00 first prize.

The final of the Plate was more clear-cut with Ken Hayward’s team of Trevor Turnbull (replaced after the first day) Les Judd and Julie Stichbury winning the two sets, six – four and nine nil over Daryll Johnson (skip) Robbie Puklowski and Linda Moy. The outstanding achievement of the tournament must be the repeat performance of first year bowler Donna Gripp, being in the winning team two years in a row.
