A Very Good Week

It started last Sunday with our annual Christmas get-together, a very good meal enjoyed by 53 members and friends followed by the chance to dance and enjoy the music played by Paul Skilton, Norman Panlilio and friend. It would appear that some of our members had had a hard day on their feet and were a little reluctant to take to the floor. I think I must have been in that group as a couple of laps did me well! Adding to the music was Barnaby Hamid who showed his talent as a trombonist. (Some of our club didn’t know that he used to play in a symphony orchestra)

Earlier in the day our Interclub men’s and women’s Reserve 7’s had performed very well; the women playing at Paraparaumu Beach had two good rounds resulting in the Singles with 2 wins, the Pairs, a win and a loss and the Fours, also with 2 wins.

The men’s singles and pairs won both their games and the Fours had a win and a draw so it had been a very good day.

On Tuesday, again at Paraparaumu Beach, we played Pennants. The men’s games were against Waikanae Blue and both morning games gave us 2 wins. Our game was close and we needed 3 points to win on the last end. When we changed over, we had points on the head so the pressure was on the opposing skip. He was about to bowl when his number three told him to change hands. This he did, but forgot to change the bias and consequently was dismayed to see it going away across the green. After my last bowl, and we were holding 5 points, we breathed a sigh as their skip dropped short and we had the win. Pressure on us all, but we came through. In our afternoon game we were in a similar situation, needing two points for the win but we only managed one and had a draw. Our other team did well, winning both their games.

Our Women won both their morning game against Central Levin but lost both in the afternoon round.

Tonight was again the Corner to Corner competition and the sun had brought out a good number of contestants. The final saw Ken Hayward take out the prize, managing to get his bowl to run neatly along the edge of the green to end up the closest to the corner. Good for him, but not for me as I thought I had a chance of the win until Ken did the damage with his bowl.

It was really wonderful playing in the sunshine without wind this afternoon, long may it continue.
