Dylan Thomas takes out the BKC Novice Singles. I think no one would have been surprised by his efforts as he is an exceptional player. The event was played in two sections of four and the win of each section played each other for the title. The second placed players also played a final for third and fourth. Thomas won all his games in his section and played the final against A Farrall Waikanae who also won all his section games. The club congratulated Thomas for winning the final 21-11 and becoming the third person in our club to win this event in recent times.
But for me the fantastic success of another of our players Phil Stirrat was really pleasing. Stirrat was drawn in the same section as Dylan Thomas so the best he could hope for was second in the section and third overall. He won a very tight game against I Lankshear Waikanae 21-20. He next played Thomas and was soundly beaten by this classy player 4-21. However Stirrat bounced back to win another cliff hanger 21-20 against G Hopkins Paraparaumu Beach. Finishing second behind Thomas in his section gave him the opportunity to play for third and fourth. In his final he played H Guthrie Waikanae and recorded a good win 21-8.
Our third player in this event was Sam Anderson. Anderson is a student at Horowhenua College and plays many sports and so finds it hard to play bowls. He has only been to the club a couple of times this season. He was beaten in all his three games by small margins which reflects his very limited amount of bowling in his first year. I’m sure if he had more time on the green it would of been very different. Anderson has the ability and a tidy delivery to do well in bowls.
Well done all the three members of Levin Bowls.
