Waikanae Wins Seddon Shield

The weather forecast wasn’t very positive for the Seddon Shield held today at Levin Bowls.  However with the assistance of the rain radar it was felt we would get the minimum of two games to qualify for a result said Shoota Ballinger.  22 teams took part from Waitarere Beach to Raumati South.  Play started at 9:30am in light drizzle and part way through the first game the light rain stopped and it became quite humid.  Due to coming rain it was decided to continue with the second game rather than lose 20 minutes for a morning tea break.  The competition was scheduled for four games and after two rounds (lunch time) the leader board was very close, with Levin Bowls Red team (Dianne Short, (Skip) Arne Jansson, Hazel Rose and Grahame Law) slightly in front of RSA Red (Mick Wilton (S), Lynette Metcalfe, Roy James and Ngaire Fluerty) and followed a little way back on differential by Waikanae Orange (Eddie Martin (S), Joy Harris, Rex Sleeman and Krys Andrews).

With the threat of heavy rain approaching, players had a short lunch break and managed to play 6 ends before the rain finally arrived, the minimum to constitute a game said Sam Kwok, Bowls Kapiti Coast Tournament Committee Conventor.  Waikanae had a great game winning 20-3 in only 6 ends to pinch the title off Levin Bowls and RSA.

Thanks to the positive comments from players on the efficiency of a well run event.  Dave Grigg and Shoota Ballinger appreciated your positive remarks.  It’s nice to get positive comments said Grigg as most times you only get remarks when things are not right.

Price money was given out to five teams, normally only the first three would receive money.  Ballinger felt he wanted to spread the winnings which meant nearly a quarter of the players received a price.
