Saturday, May 15, 2010 Season Ends

Today saw the end of our 2009-10 summer bowling season. The green looks so empty in the photo, but come next Tuesday afternoon (weather permitting), we will be back in action for the winter.
I awoke this morning to the sound of heavy rain and presumed that the afternoon closing activities would have to be held inside the clubrooms. When I arrived after lunch, it was a real surprise to find the artificial green showing no sign of flooding other that a small amount of water in the ditch surrounding the green .
So it was play as usual and good to see a good number on the green,
Mid afternoon, and the bell rang to let us know that it was time to head into the clubrooms for the presentation of trophies that had been won during the season.
Vice President Ken Hayward, standing in for our President who was not able to attend, welcomed club members, two Central Levin representatives and Carrel Knight from the Kapiti Centre.
Ken gave a resume of the club’s activities over the season and thanked all who had in some way helped to make it a most successful season.
Trophies and bars were then presented by Carrell and Life Members Bob Skilton and Wynne Bullen.
Carrell thanked the club for its help with Centre activities. She also presented Jim Bentley with his Centre badge and certificate for winning the Champion of Champion Singles. Certificates were also presented to those who had been selected to play for the Kapiti Centre or who had won a Centre Tournament. The club had been well represented.
All that was left to do then was to partake of all the goodies members had brought for afternoon tea, followed by lots of reminiscing about the season just concluded.
Just one thing had two of us pondering during the afternoon game. After asking his player, “How many shots are we down,” Neville received the answer, “One.”
“How many seconds do we have?” was the next question, to which came the reply, “None.”
Not the answer Neville or I expected!
I forgot that I had taken my camera so only took a few shots of some of the winners with their trophies –

Margaret – Open Singles
Christine and Margaret – Balloted 2x4x2

Susan and Ian – Mixed Pairs
Alice, Coral and Margaret – Open Triples

Alice, Ann, Susan and Margaret – Open Fours
