Breaking Us In

The first gala of the winter season was on today’s programme so the weather decided to give us a taste of what we are likely to experience during the next few months.

We awoke to find fog over the town but by the time the gala started at 9.30am it had all gone and we were left with early morning winter coolness. Jerseys and jackets on and then onto the green we went.

Late morning saw the sun break through so it was time to shed the extra clothes and enjoy the ‘warmth’ that was on offer.

Not long after lunch it was noticeable that the temperature had dropped and the wind, especially at the north end of the green, was distinctly cooler and to the south, dark cloud was filling the sky.

With only three ends to go, we began to feel the fine drops from the sky but luckily, the rain didn’t really fall steadily until once we were inside for afternoon tea.

A taste of what we might expect had been the message we had experienced through the day. Not really threatening and we did show that we will be able to cope …. as long as it doesn’t get any worse.

And the results of the gala:

Four teams ended up with three wins  so ends won sorted out the prizes:

Llew Jones (s), Janine Hansen, Don Mochan:  3 wins and 23 ends.

Dianne Short (s), Hazel Rose, Paul Gardner:  3 wins and 19 ends

The other two teams who missed out receiving a prize were:

Eileen Thorn (s), Doris Thorn, Martin Howse:    3 wins and 18 ends

Brian Thompson (s), May Thompson and Reta Morris: 3 wins and 17 ends

Today’s notable feature seemed to be the number of wrong biases played; one of our ladies whose name I wont ‘Lodge’  here, did three, two of them consecutively, and our visitor from Petone (another lady) did one. True, some men who must have been distracted, added to the total but they were really just accidental.

Some good donations for St Johns.

To finish, I did enjoy it when, after hearing a skip yell out to one of his players after noticing the bowl on its way, “What are you playing that hand for, it’s no use there, you wont get the shot.” only to observe the bowl in question draw into the head and rest beside the kitty.  Skips don’t always know everything! (But mostly, I think!! – or is that a bit biased also.)

Enjoy your winter season.
