The keen ones were out yesterday for a Saturday roll-up, the sun was shining encouraging us all to have a game of bowls.
It was an afternoon of some really excellent play and showed some real skills from some players.
The teams were ‘drawn’ (not sure that that was true, sorted might be a better word) and as it turned out, my opposition had one of those days when everything goes right.
Alice Spicer lead for the opposition and was never far from the jack, a first class performance, this followed by Don Hutchins who also played well. Paul Gardner was their skip and I think that his play on the day would have been the best I have ever seen from him. The heads mainly required him to draw, and this he did, rarely not achieving the result he required. Great bowling.
We tried hard to counter their play but really, for me, I wondered what I was doing on the green. I had one of those days which is best forgotten; I think I would have been better sitting on the bank with my bowls, admiring what other players were achieving.
On the next rink, Fred Adams and Neville Turnbull were having a very close game, with bowls generally close to the jack. I watched a little of their game and was impressed with the skills shown by their players. Someone told me after the game that Brian Thompson had played really well, his lead bowls were always on target, but others were achieving similar results with their bowls. Going into the last end there was only one point the difference, showing how close the game was. A great standard.
So at the end of play, I must say how impressed I was with much of the play seen during the afternoon. I hope the sun continues to shine on our players and bring out such good results. I’ll try to forget about my play!
