By the starting time of 10.30am, the weather had begun to clear and play got underway in this previously postponed event.
This was an opportunity for the men to try out the new Dales surface in competitive play and all were pleased with how well it performed. I didn’t detect any straighteners and players’ bowls kept their line very well. It was interesting in the first game that we were able to see the line our bowls were taking as the damp surface meant that bowls left a trail behind. Once the surface dried, this didn’t happen and one had to rely on their memory.
It seemed that our bowls ran more freely when the green was damp – I certainly found it not as easy to get the necessary weight as the day progressed. Mind you, it could have been that I was just a little tired … but that really isn’t much of an excuse.
The women’s games were held on the cotula green.
