What a Last End

Though the sun was  out, a cold SE wind blew on the green and made bowling quite difficult for the players in one of the semi-final Mixed Fours matches played this afternoon at the club. (The other match is to be played on Friday starting at 11.00am)

The start of each end often saw the Jack either landing in the ditch or going out of bounds and playing towards the east saw a lot of short bowls – conversely, the ditch was receiving them at the other end.

Brian Cooper looking up the green for bowls!!

Neither team at any stage jumped well ahead on the score board – 4 all, 8 all, and finally entering the final end with Margaret MacKay’s team leading 9-8.

Vern Murphy sent up his first bowl, clipped the Jack, sending it into the ditch with his bowl managing to stay close to the edge, but not that close, and one thought it would be difficult to beat.

Lodzia Wnek leading for Brian Cooper played her best bowl of the game, drawing very close to the ditch and the Jack. It was going to be hard to beat and looked like getting a draw at least for Brian’s team.

Don Hutchins and Joe Wnek playing Two in their teams, did not change the position …and then it was the 3’s turn. Ann Malone played her first bowl, no change – Margaret Griffin did the same, and it was then that Ann played the bowl of the match. A draw with the right line and length ended up close to the ditch and the Jack, but was just a little closer than Lodzia’s effort, giving the shot to Margaret MacKay’s team. Brian did his best to get rid of the bowl but to no avail so the final score and the win went to Margaret’s Team 10-8

A game that could have gone either way, enjoyable for the small number watching  from the warmth of the clubrooms.

How close it was
