The toss was made and the Men won and chose the Cotula green to play on in todays Championship Pairs competition.
The 10 women’s teams playing on the Dales green and the 12 men’s teams, got underway at 9.00 am in quite gloomy conditions. During the morning there were the occasional spots of rain but play wasn’t stopped at all.
After the first two rounds in the women’s sections, three teams had won both games and had qualified – Hildi Ewart/Jan Dawson, Dianne Short/Susan Boxall, and Hazel Rose/Lodzia Wnek. I saw a big smile on Jan’s face when telling someone of their win against the strong combination, Ra Walker and Margaret Griffin.
The third game was vital for those teams with only one win and proving successful were Audrey Sciascia/Joan Hayward, and also, Margaret Griffin/Ra Walker
The draw has now been done for post section play to be held on Saturday 26 November as follows:
Audrey Sciascia v Hazel Rose and the winner will play in the 2nd round, Dianne Short. Also in the 2nd Round, Ra Walker will play Hildi Ewart, both these teams having a first round bye.
The men enjoyed their time on the cotula green, something that has been restricted this season by so much rain.
The first two rounds ended with Fred Adams/Omeka Feaunati, Shoota Ballinger/Dave Walker, Neville Turnbull/Brian Coe and Dave Scrivener/Paul Gardner all winning their first two games, thus qualifying.
Joe Wnek with partner Michael Norris played really well against Ken Hayward and Trevor Tuatara, winning this game in their 2nd round. Ian Wenham/Jack Willis, and Brian Furness/Paul Skilton each had only one win at that stage so the third round was quite a battle with some tight finishes.
After the days play the men’s draw was also made and is as follows, to be played on the 26 November:
I Wenham v N Turnbull, D Scrivener v K Hayward and after a first round by, S Ballinger v F Adams.
Brian Cooper doing his bit to “help” roll the green
It had been a really interesting day’s play, some close matches with lots of skill shown, some wins which surprised some people but as we all should know, anything can happen in a game of bowls.
