Margaret Remembers Family

Yesterday, Margaret once again sponsored her Hammond Memorial Gala in memory of her parents, Selby and Jean Hammond who both were Patrons of the Club at the time of their passing.

It looks as if you are viewing a cross but in fact it is just part of the back of the seat at the

eastern end o fRink 2, Green 1, a plaque donated by Margaret when seats were put around the greens.

Last year at the time of running her last Memorial Gala, I print again what I wrote just incase you haven’t seen it:

The Hammonds were very active bowlers and helpers at the club for many years when we had the men’s section, Levin Bowling club, and the Women’s Section known as Levin West. Both became Life Members of the club and their daughter, Margaret, carries on with the family tradition of being a great worker for the club.

There are not too many of us still around who remember them but I was one of the lucky ones and remember them  both fondly. In particular, Selby was a close friend of my father, Herbie; both were active workers around the club and in particular, Selby was the Bar Manager. This area has changed a bit over the years and I well remember calling in one afternoon to see how things were going, only to find out that my father’s head was split open. In those days the front of the bar was closed up at the end of the day with a wooden screen. The next time they planned opening for service, a cord pulled this screen inwards and up and was then tied securely. On that particular day, something gave way and the screen swung down and connected with my father’s head. Lots of blood everywhere and very sore head.

Yesterday, we once again remembered Selby and Jean with Mixed Triples being held on both greens. In additions this year, the wind decided to join in with the players and did it blow; some really strong blast making it hard at time (if not all the time) to be reasonably accurate with line and length.

At lunch time, three draws were made for the 3 raffles that Margaret had provided and it was pleasing to see that the first draw went to Margaret herself. Fred Adams took out 2nd prize and the 3rd went to Grace Virtue.

The end of play came, afternoon tea was provided and then it was time to see who had coped the best with the competition they had met:

Green 1. Play was on the artificial Dales Green and though teams played four games, there was no 4 game winners so the prizes went to three teams with 3 wins, as follows:

1st –  Grace and Gary Snellgrove – 3 wins, 30 ends and 48 points.

2nd – June and John Mears – 3 wins, 30 ends and 48 points.

3rd – Eileen and Norm Kopke – 3 wins, 28 ends and 56 points.

Green 2, played on the Cotula green and there a team did win all games-Results as follows:

1st – Audrey Sciascia and Shoota – 4 wins, 33 ends and 43 points

2nd – Fred Adams and Joan Hayward – 3 wins 29 ends and 61points

3rd – Judy Johnston and Murray Griffin – 3 wins, 26 ends and 46 points

Once again, a happy day (except for the wind) of bowls with perhaps a few more challenges than usual.

Thanks Margaret.
