An Introduction to Sports Manawatu

We had been contacted by Sport Manawatu to take a group of people and introduce them to bowls.

This we did this morning and I had help from David Lowndes, Jan Dawson and Hildi Ewart, members of our club.

We met in the clubrooms and Margaret Griffin also arrived and prepared a welcoming cup of tea/coffee; the visitors also brought some goodies.

I was not sure what to expect from the group but since  returning home, I looked up the Internet and found that they were a group of people who had been recommended by the medical profession to be involved with the Health section of Sports Manawatu.

The introduction to their site  http://www.sportmanawatu.org.nz/ says

At Sport Manawatu we cover much more than just sport; we run community events, work with schools, early childhood centres, coaches, volunteers and much more. In short we do anything we can to get everyone active everyday.

And under the heading Health:

HEALTH

Wanting to get more physically active? Get yourself a Green Prescription. A Green Prescription (GRx) can be obtained from your doctor, nurse or community health worker and is a script with a difference. Instead of medicine it prescribes physical activity. Sport Manawatu run a Green Prescription programme which offers support and advice to patients by providing education sessions and classes which include walking, aqua aerobics or resistence training.

So that is what it was all about and it really was a pleasure, introducing our game to them. For some, it was just too difficult but most were able to give it a try and I’m sure they really enjoyed the challenge of the game. Lots of smiles and they seemed to really enjoy the game.

Three staff members were with the group and they also took part .

One of the visitors has quickly picked up delivering the bowl

One of the staff giving the game a try.

At the same time, one of the visitor’s helper was waiting for her turn to play and at the same time, kept in touch with someone by cellphone,

It was now her turn, but communicating was  still important.

And now the bowl had arrived – “What was that you said?”
