Bowls Kapiti Centre Men’s Triples Final

It is usually the opposition that one tries to beat in any bowls game but this morning on the Bowls Levin green, the weather also played a major part as an opponent. For most of the game, it was fine except for a brief shower mid game, but the wind really made things difficult for the players.

Sample of bowls delivered into the westerly wind early in the game which shows how difficult it was to get both green and weight correct

The two teams  involved in the final today were  Ken Souto (s), Ken Mills and Lochie McAllister from the Waikanae Bowling Club and Rex Holmes (s), Ray Boffa and Jim Swift from the Paraparaumu Bowling Club.  The game was played on our cotula green and back to eighteen ends.
A good crowd was present to watch the game and all appreciated how difficult it was for the players to get things right.
It seemed that in the end, Rex and his team were able to cope more constantly and ended up as the winners, the score at 21 to 12.
Third equal was Neville Turnbull’s Levin team and Ian Mahoney’s team from Central Levin.

Our club committee and its members responsible for our greens, Michael Hearsey, our Greens Consultant,  Neville Turnbull – Green Superintendent, Tony Jones – Green Keeper, Trevor Turnbull -responsible for green spraying and Murray Griffin who is our Dales Green Keeper will be pleased to have heard of an email from Steve Mishkin from Waikanae who played in the tournament:

I would like to congratulate the centre on playing the centre triples at Levin bowling club.

This natural green must be one of the best greens in NZ.  It is perfectly true with everything done 100% correctly.  Little extra such as good mats, good boards, new jacks and ditches lined with rubber so bowls aren’t scratched and jacks stop in the ditches.

On Sunday when heavy rain interrupted play, we played on an excellent artificial green that was very true and allowed shots to be played.

Congratulations Levin, you certainly lifted the standard of hospitality and greens.  I wish you well in the future, keep up the good work.
