A ‘Champion’ Day

The day ended late in the afternoon with the club finding their Champion Mens and Womens teams.
Our ladies had already settled on yesterday, finding their three post section teams and Margaret MacKay and Dianne Short’s teams got going mid-morning, Dianne winning the match, 19-11.
When I arrived early in the afternoon, the final had got underway and the scoreboard indicated that Dianne. Hazel, Ginny and Joan had started well, scoring two singles, a three and then a five to be leading10-0.
Alice’s team then replied with a five to get their score started and from then on, gained shots on most ends with their opponents only replying twice with singles.
The wind was gusty and it was often difficult for all players to get steady lines and weight for their bowls.
Alice led her team well with steady bowls and the team was congratulated on winning the match 21-12

The Men’s post-section got started at 9.00am with a game between Neville Turnbull and Rob Cotter. Things were looking OK for both teams when after 10 ends, Neville’s Four were in front, 10-9.
The next three ends brought just too many problems for Rob’s team, dropping a five, a four and then a six to bring the match to a close with still two ends to go, the board reading 25-9.
Shoota Ballinger, John Adams, Brian Coe and Martin Howse now were to play Neville, Keith Galloway, Trevor Turnbull and Keith West.
The men’s final game was a real test, with the gusting wind often being a challenge for players and the final end showed this when pressure was really on players and bowls.
The early ends got Martin, Brian, John and Shoota off to a steady start but Neville, Keith T, Trevor and Keith W came on and after 9 ends, the scores were level at 7 all.
Though Neville’s team scored four further singles in the game, Shoota’s team with a 4 on the eleventh end, was the only real difference between the teams, with the win going to Shoota’s Four on the last end, 13-10.
It had proved to be a most interesting game, with all players facing the challenge of a championship final
