TJ’s Gala

Tony Jones (TJ) – Greenkeeper

Friday saw a full green of entries taking part in this years T J’s Gala. The club thanks Tony for sponsoring this event for the club, one he has put on over recent years. We are so lucky in having a group who assist the club so that we can play bowls on a top-class surface. It was such a pleasure yesterday playing on the cotula green; it not only looked good but proved its quality by the way players were able to send their bowls with real pleasure towards the Jack. (We won’t go into the reason why some bowlers didn’t manage to get their bowls to where they meant them to arrive.)
The draw was made and the games got started at 9.30am, each one being 10 ends.
One could wonder why in the first game, my team trailed by 1-11; our opponents were playing so accurately, but with only a few ends left, we eventually lost the game by only one point, 10-11. Keith must have been wondering what had been going on as well.
We managed a win before lunch and then were all donated lunch by Tony, something we all appreciated.
But perhaps my team should have then taken time for a rest period, but instead, we went out to face Alice and her team.   I think we got perhaps 2 points, but Alice, playing great bowls, skipped her team  and left us waaaaay behind.
Our last game we managed a good win but again, one just never knows quite how things would turn out. Our opponent had done well throughout their day but they just seemed to miss out in their last game.
After all games had finished the results were:
1st: Alice Spicer, Rex Spicer and Jim Bagnall – 4 wins, 27 ends, 61 points
2nd: Keith Galloway, Liz Galloway and Diana McGill – 4 wins, 26 end, 52 points
3rd: Dianne Short, Murray Griffin and Hazel Rose – 3½ wins, 22 ends, 48 points.

At the end of the day, Tony was again in action, putting on a BBQ. I wasn’t able to be there, but have heard that all went well.
THANKS  Tony again making your gala such a great event.
