Wednesday today, weather OK, as it was yesterday when I went to the afternoon roll-up. It didn’t look promising in the morning and I presumed that play would be played on the artificial green but when I arrived near 1.00pm, I could see lots of cars already there and our cotula green being rolled for play.
TodayI have spent mot of my time at home doing things that kept me occupied, but I have just seen the weather map and it looks as if it will be a damp morning with many people possibly being involved in remembering ANZAC day. The chances are that the parades in the morning could be wet, but if it does clear up, I hope that I will be able to have another game of bowls with Don on the green.
Yesterday, I was able to have Don in my team for the roll-up and he really did play well. We were playing triples and as my lead, he was in fine form. Age has caught up with him a bit, he has some problems seeing the head at the other end of the green and certainly his legs have slowed him down. He now finds in necessary to keep his feet firmly stable on the bowling mat, he then decides whether to deliver forehand or backhand, both which he can use, then he bends down and delivers his bowls. How he manages to work out the line his bowls need to take we actually don’t know, but it does work for him. Line and weight worked out, off goes the bowl and yesterday he got them so often very close to the Jack. All this works out for him at his age of early nineties.
What he will do tomorrow will be different because I am sure he will be involved with the RSA. I know he will not be marching but certainly will be with friends remembering their past together. It’s not often he tells me about the war but certainly the Battle of Casino in Italy was a place where he took part.
But come the afternoon, it could well be that we will see him down at the bowling club and it will be a chance for us to have a chat with him about the past… and then perhaps we’ll get involved with a short game of bowls.
I was told by a fellow bowler yesterday that his son living in the north had read my Blog now and then. Just as it happened, yesterday, he was playing in the opposite team against Don. When they are next on the phone talking together, he could have a good chat about the bowls played yesterday and how well his opponent, Don, my lead, had played. Great company too.
