Yes, this was the first end for today’s gala and one can see a large array of bowls across the green. Nice that the sun was shining but this really wasn’t what I meant by the title of today’s post.
The fact that our first game, which was a close loss, could well be taken as a surprise, but that seems to happen off and on; trouble was that we lost all our three games today. No, what really happened was something I first saw take place many years ago and it really brought a big smile to me today, and no doubt to other players close by.
The incident was the result of a player leading off their game. No doubt they were trying to get their bowl away smoothly and accurately to set the head up for their team.
The bowl certainly started well but it was when it drew to a stop at the other end, players involved realised that there was no Jack on the head for bowls to gather around. The simple fact was that one hadn’t been delivered to start the end off. One can well imagine how the bowler felt, but it did bring warm smiles to faces; also a reminder to all who lead how important getting the Jack up the green to where their Skip has indicated they want it.
As mentioned earlier, we lost our three games but the last match did please some. We lead for most of the game but the final end gave our opponents the chance to win by getting three points, enough to win not only the game but to win today’s competition as well. A very good effort from the three players, Maree, Joe and Lodzia.
Next week will see the end of this winter’s 11.00am start triples gala, the first time the club has run the event and it has proved to be very popular; today all rinks taken.
Today’s results:
1st L Wnek, J Wnek, M Anstis – 3wins, 16 ends, 35 points
2nd F Adams, J Hayward, O Feaunati – 3 wins, 16 ends, 31 points
3rd R Cotter, B McMahon, L Mahupuku – 3wins, 15 ends, 34 points
As can be seen, very close results between the teams.
On Green 2 we could see Tony, the GreenKeeper, coring/drilling.(not sure of the correct title).
Worth viewing the photos that are in our website Gallery. http://www.levin.bowls.org.nz/Home.html
Today was also a chance to view some of the clubs ‘decorations’ that have been replaced on the refurbished clubroom walls, in particular on the south.
Of special interest to Margaret Griffin and to me are our fathers’ photos.
I still give Herbie a wink.
