A Day of Contrasts

flo
It was another morning start for the Balloted Men’s and Women’s Triples today after a night of lots of rain. As can be seen in the photo, the cotula green had been covered by the rain and was more like a mirror than a playing surface when viewed. Also seen but on the artificial Dales green, were the players who were to continue from where Saturday’s games had ended.  And that wasn’t very far.

We managed to complete game one by 11.00am yesterday but that was about as far as we got because of the rain showers. All but my game had finished the 14 ends played and before any further progress could be made, we had to find our winner because the game ended as a draw.  Not pleasant in the drizzling rain but a winning team skipped by John Adams had been found. Rain again set in so the rest of the day’s play was postponed.

The green was ready this morning and by the conclusion of the second round, only one men’s team had qualified, that skipped by Rob Cotter. The final chance to qualify resulted in Rob putting my team out, Paul Gardner did likewise to Neville Turnbull and his team. The closest match was between Joe Wnek and Shoota. Their scores were level at 12 all with one end to go but the win went to the former.

The two semifinalists then got under way. John, Murray Griffin and Jimmy Adams  played Paul Gardner, Rex Spicer and Trevor Turnbull while on the other rink, Joe Wnek, Martin Howse and Elias Falconer played Rob Cotter, Jim Bagnall and Ian Upston.

Rob and his team were in top form, to win their match but the other game was close throughout. With one end to go, Paul led 9-8 but John’s team gained two points to find themselves the eventual win

The ladies ended their qualifying games with three teams; Barbara Sellers winning her three games and Hazel Rose and Alice Spicer with two each. The draw was made; Hazel got the bye.an that left the other pair who went out and played their match to find the other finalist. This ended with Alice, Dawn Dales and Diana McGill winning against Barbara, Margaret Lowndes and Julie Stitchbury.
The finalists have now been found but as yet a date to end the competition has still to be set. We look forward to seeing these games played.
