Enjoyment

Sunday, May 23, 2010 Enjoyment

For most people who play the game, bowls is about enjoyment and this can be obtained in so many ways.

Today’s mixed 2x4x2 gala played on the artificial green gave many players the opportunity to really enjoy their game.

For some, it was just the simple fact that they out on the green, the day was fine, the company was good and that they had played so much better than they had the other day, with much better line and length and more controlt.

For others, it was being in a team and winning a game, perhaps even more than one.

I noticed a couple walking past the green, stop and watch the games for a time and one person even demonstrate to the other how a bowl was delivered. They certainly enjoyed watching us playing, something that our open fence allows now, different from the concrete wall that was there when I started playing.

Specific bowls played are great when they happen, as when Lodzia drew the shot on the final end against us making the game a draw and Omeka, in one of his games drawing the perfect shot when down on the head. His opponent must have equally enjoyed his drive which put the jack in the ditch for four shots; more often than not it would have missed.

Someone who seems to enjoy all aspects of the game and today, often playing near me, was Gwen, who seemed to be just having a ball.

At the start of the day, her partner told her that she could be skip and even though she didn’t think about how the position of skip changes each end during 2x4x2, I believe she had the skip’s role in her mind. I’m guessing this by the number of drives she sent down during the day. What must have been the most enjoyable moment for her, was when her bowl entered the head and after all had settled down, found that she and her partner were holding 6 shots.  Her smile seemed to light up the green.

So I hope all who  turned out for today’s gala, enjoyed their day in one way or another and will be looking forward eagerly for the next gala.

It was good to see Bill Kamo, once a member here but now in Christchurch, back on the green, and as well, new associate member Donna Jones and her playing partner from Shannon. Special thanks also go to Pat Hansen for helping in the kitchen.

Today’s Results:

Ken Hayward and Margaret MacKay – 4 wins, 19 ends and 45 points.

Ian Wenham and Susan Boxall – 3½ wins, 21 ends and 42 points

Bill Kamo and May Thompson – 3 wins, 21 ends and 38 points.
