Perhaps hard to believe, but a few of us were “keen” to have our usual Tuesday roll-up yesterday.
You had to be really keen to try to play bowls with wind that was blowing. It was very strong, gusty, at times making it hard to remain steady before delivering a bowl and above all else, near impossible to get the weight and line right.
We were pleased when we got a shot, even if it was several metres away from the jack, at least it was still on our rink. I presume we all thought that we were learning how to deal with the conditions, though in reality, it wasn’t very obvious. At least the sun was sort of shining.
A stop for a cup of tea was for many of us, also a chance to say that we had had enough. Some at least still kept on with their learning!
It reminded me how when still a Junior, Gary and I went down to the green to have a special practice to prepare for Wellington’s wind. We were going to play the next day in the National Pairs and on this day, as it was blowing strong in Levin and we presumed that the next day in the city would be the same, we decided to get some experience of the conditions.
Came the next day, off we went to Wellington and as it happened, it was a sunny calm day. So much for our practice.
It will be interesting to see how we, who learnt how to deal with the wind yesterday, get on today in the afternoon gala. Problem is that there is no wind today to test our new skill level.
