It was Farewell Dennis Day and one that was special to so many people.
I arrived well before the service to find so many people already there, not just bowlers but also family and friends.
As part of the service some people spoke about Dennis – a family member, a neighbour, and from our bowling side, Brian.
Our thanks to Brian for what he said, not only as a bowler but especially about his friendship with Dennis. There was no doubt about whom Brian was talking. His reminiscences were such that we had Dennis clearly in our mind, him being such a character, always ready to have a joke, equally able to let you know what he thought about you if something you had said or done had upset him – though soon forgotten, all recognisably Dennis.
Back at our clubrooms where we gathered after the service, we were able to meet up with Margaret and her friends, all chatting together and sharing memories.
Brian reminded us all about the size of the bowls Dennis had used, marbles we called them, and he used them later in the afternoon to show that they were still usable – not necessarily as skilfully as Dennis had done.
It really was a day to remember so much about the lad.
We say again, Farewell Dennis.
