Jack Hammond joined the Levin Bowling club in October 1965 and for many years until his death in 1985, played a major part in the running of our club.
A summary of many of his activities is a follows:
Umpire 1968-81 Centre Delegate (Manawatu) 1975-76 1980-82 Committee member 1967 1972 1974 1976 1978 Match Committee 1967-70 1972 1974 1976 Social Committee 1973 Vice President 1969 President 1970 Publicity officer
I’m not sure when the Hammond Shield became an active tournament between our local clubs (a look tomorrow on the winners names on the shield should show this) but it has been going for many years.

Today it was played between teams from Levin, Central and combined RSA and Levin Women playing Singles and Fours in the morning and Pairs and Triples in the afternoon. Both greens were needed to allow the 30 games to be played.
A lot of preparation is needed to get this tournament organised and we are lucky to have Margaret Griffin prepared to put so much time into the event.
At the end of the day, Margaret announced the number of games won by the three clubs as follows:
Levin 15, Central Levin 10 and RSA/Levin Women 5 so the home club received the Shield.
Margaret presented the shield to our representative, Ian!
