I went down to the club today and had a look at the Shield that we won yesterday and can now let you know a bit of its history.
After a look at the result shields that are attached, it was first played for in 1980 and the winner was Levin Womens’/RSA. They must have been a very strong combination because they went on and won the Shield each year to and including 1986.
Year 1987 saw the RSA win the shield without the help of the Womens’ players, 1988 was at last our Levin Clubs turn and Central got their first win in 1989.
I didn’t bother to count up how many each club has won since then, was more interested in the early days of the Shield.
As an extra point, Margaret Griffin from our club does great work each year, organising the event. Her father was Selby Hammond but he was not related to Jack Hammond….perhaps the name just adds a little more encouragement to Margaret to keep the event going.
