Sunday, July 01, 2012 Training Day

I called in this afternoon and watched for a time,  a large number of players taking part in a Centre Training day.
In the morning they had a time discussing various players roles in games and in the afternoon, played on the green.
The game that I saw them playing in the afternoon was called Petanque, based on the rules of the real game.
The lead of one team would play their bowl followed by the opposition lead. The player who held the shot would stand back and the other player would again play a bowl and would carry on until a member of that team regained the shot. The lead of the opposing team would then play their next bowl and so on until that team regained the shot….and so it went on until all bowls had been played. It could easily be that the lead’s bowl couldn’t been beaten by any of the opposition and after all their bowls had been played, the shot holding team would then play their bowls. That would be a big score of course.
I hope I have got this right, it simply meant that once a team held the shot, the opposition would bowl to regain the shot.   Just another form of playing bowls and from what I heard, the players were enjoying the  change.

Gary, waiting his turn – ask him what he thought of the game.
The club’s flag was flying at half-mast today in recognition of the passing of Geoff Bentley.
Geoff  joined us from the Waikanae Club in 1996 but of recent times has been a Social Member because of his health. Many of us remember him when he was playing bowls and later, being a card player of note. Our sympathy goes to Nyra.
