2×2 Singles and Pairs

Today saw the 2×2 tournament once again organised and run by Neville, and like the weather, very successful.
Sixteen pairs entered with players from a variety of clubs in the Kapiti and Manawatu Centres.
All the pairs played each other; two ends or if then tied, an extra end to find the winner.
Some really tight games were played and accuracy was needed right from the start.

As can be seen in the photo, close bowls were necessary. In this case the three bowls were from the same team; their fourth bowl also counted but was a bit further back.
It was interesting hearing from Barnaby (above), that though they were not in the winning pairs, he and his partner, Rob, had won many of their games against pairs who ended in the top group.
Following the Pairs, a Singles 2 x2 One life tournament followed and again, accuracy was needed to win and carry on. (as is usual in bowls, a bit of luck can also be of assistance!)
The afternoon ended with afternoon tea (thanks Margaret Lowndes, Fred and Brian), and then the prizes were presented to the winners by Club Captain Fred Adams.
Lucky team prize was won by Ken Smyth and Jan Dawson
Pairs Results:   Wins – draws – losses

Singles Final:
Won by Tony Jensen, present President of the Manawatu Centre and he plays for the Johnson Park Club in Feilding.
His opponent and runner up was Chris Barrett from the Palmerston North Club, a player who has won a lot of Singles titles.
Fred Adams congratulated and presented the winners with their prize and it was pleasing to hear Neville Turnbull being thanked by players for the time and effort he had put in to organising and running the tournament.
It was also interesting to hear the comments from a top player, saying that this was his first time playing this type of tournament and wasn’t sure how he would take to it. Nice to hear him say how much he had enjoyed the day when all players had played every other player, not very common in bowls.
We can all say it a was a most successful day.
