A Wet Opening Day

The weather forecast was correct, it did rain in the afternoon, just as we played the first end of the summer season.

Our new President, Hazel, welcomed all members to the new summer season and also called on Euan Hubbard, President Kapiti Bowling Umpires’ Association, to present Barnaby Hamid with his Umpires badge which he had passed  recently.

While inside, Hazel presented championship bars and trophies to the winners of winter championships .
Though the sky looked threatening, we went out to see Noel Larsen, a member since 1969, deliver the first Jack for the season and then Don Hutchins put up the first bowl. Teams had been drawn and we quickly started play for the afternoon but by the end of only one end, most players quickly picked up their bowls and called the game off. (I noted at least one game did play their bowls back.)

Not a great start but we do look forward to the coming season’s play.

Wrapped up and packing up as well

Once settled inside, Ginny issued papers for groups seated around tables to take part in a quiz, an interesting and challenging way to fill in time until afternoon tea was served.
‘Play’ had ended and talk was well under way to finish the Opening.    Just another part of playing bowls!!
