 Ready for Summer Bowls

I didn’t play in today’s Gala, the first for the summer season; it was simply that my usual players weren’t available, but after taking my rubbish out to the gate for collection, I quickly decided that being at home might be just the right way to spend the day. To the south, the sky was threatening, the wind was really cold and glimpses of snow on the Tararuas were all indications of not a nice day ahead.

The day in fact ended up a real mixture, even periods of sunshine, but never any warmth to speak of. I managed to get my lawns mown and then decided to go down to the green to see how the players were managing.

Rain in the air

Most impressive was the green itself. I expected them to be still playing on the artificial green but no, the cotula was being used and it looked just great. So different from what we used to get a quite a few years ago when those responsible, seemed to be afraid to cut the green too low at the start of each season. Always so heavy back then.

Perhaps most noticeable today was the clothing. It wasn’t the fact that whites weren’t being worn, (not needed now for galas), but that the players were so well wrapped up against the cold and possible rain.

Part of the days Highs and Lows!!

Four games of 10 ends were to be  played and after three had been completed, only two teams had not had a loss.  The luck of the draw this time saw that these two teams were to play each other – Dianne Short (s), Hazel Rose and Paul Gardner to play Alice (s) and Rex Spicer with Jim Bagnel leading. I expected the game to be close but as it turned out,  Alice and her team, playing very good bowls, just shot ahead and ended winning by a clear margin.

A team playing in this last round had their third win and had enough ends to take out the 2nd prize.

Quite and interesting day.

1st: Alice, Rex and Jim – 4 wins and 25 ends

2nd Bill Clelland (s), Robert Falconer  and Diana McGill   3 wins and 24 ends.
