Singles Champion of Champions

Men and women Singles Champions from clubs throughout the Centre played today to find who would become this seasons Champion of Champions, a challenge for all bowlers.
At Waitarere Beach Liz, our Women’s champion, played against the Otaki player who won the game 21-13. A pity I couldn’t see the game, Liz, but am sure you  did your best. Not many players get the chance to take part in that competition.
The men’s event was held on Green 1 at Central Levin and it was there that Gary Wylie, a Junior player from our club, took part. (Gary is also a full member at Central Levin as well but he won our club’s Open Singles).
His first game was against the Raumati South player and it was a tight battle until towards the end, when Gary took control and went on to win that game 21-19.
In his next game, Gary was facing Rex Holmes from Paraparaumu Beach, a player who is very well known by his top performances over the years, and this resulted in the closest of wins for Gary, 21-20.
Came the semi-final and another tight game faced him, this time agains Ian Mahoney from the Central Club….and once again, another tight game, and from what I have heard, nearly a win, but Gary went down 19-21.   Ian then played the final, winning the game agains the Waikanae Beach player 21-11. Congratulations Ian.

It can be seen from our point of view that Gary, a Junior, did very well indeed and we congratulate him on his play. Makes me proud too, as I remember when I introduced him to bowls by getting him to try out the game in our Business House competition a while back. What was so noticeable was that he accepted the challenge that the game give us and at the same time, the company we all enjoy. A great day for you, Gary.
