Usually our club selects four teams for a Rotary day, to play at two different venues – as an example, two playing at Foxton Beach and the other two at RSA. It was different today because it was Final Day and play had to be held at a two-green venue, Central Levin was used.
The usual two games, each of ten ends, were played and it was noted from previous Rotary day that Central and our Club were close to the top of the results.
My team had a close win in our first game by just one point but we struck real problems in our second game played against RSA team. Lorraine, their skip and her male bowlers were in fine form, drawing well, hitting targets when necessary and it seemed that no matter what we tried, things just didn’t work out. Fred’s team had two good wins and the other two teams had a loss each in the first round followed by a win each in round two.
After the games, afternoon tea was held and then Ben Lee, the organiser of this years Rotary, outlined some of the research he had done, finding out about ‘Rotary.’
The earliest Minutes he was able to find go back to 1969 and I was interested hearing that my father, Herbie, was one of the organizers at that time. He noted too that clubs at that time were required to pay $50 which seemed to be used at the end of the competition to provide a meal to players… plus a beer. Reduced fee now days, only $35 a club, but you don’t get a free beer !
Thanks go to Waitarere Beach Club for this season’s Rotary and to Central Levin for the use of their club today.
Today’s event concluded with the presentation of the shield to the winning club, Levin, presented to our organizer, Murray Griffin.

1 Levin – 103 points
2 Central – 96
3 Foxton/Foxton Beach – 75
